Laundry Soap - I made my own

Yes, this is the mess I made making my own Laundry Soap... It didn't take long at all.

This is my recipe:

1 Bar Zote Soap
1 Bar Fells Naptha Soap
* shred in the food processor, this is about 6 cups
2 Cups Borax
2 Cups Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
* Shred it all up together into a finer powder and you are done!

Use 2 Table Spoons per load.
My whites came out WHITER!

CP Soap Batch #2 - Vanilla Cinnamon Poppyseed Swirl

This is soap batch #2:

Vanilla - for the sent
Cinnamon - for the color
Poppyseed - for texture/exfoliation
Swirl - for making it really pretty!

This the first time I have tried coloring, and additive and swirling.
"They" say only try one new thing at a time.
I figured I could handle adding a little cinnamon AND making swirls.
I think I read that the color of the soap may change as it cures.
I hope it gets darker.

Ahhhh... and the lovely mess left behind. Just like baking!

My "M's" boss back from Paris

My boss "M" at "M's" came back from Paris today... well came back to work from being in Paris for the past week. She brought back the **sweetest** treat!

Macaroons from Laduree!
Evidently they are famous for their macaroons.
They decorate cakes with them and have a "champagne and macaroon bar" to boot!

The flavors were/are as follows:
Red: Raspberry *so amazing*
Brown1: Chocolate
Brown2: Chocolate
(I'm sure they were different chocolates but both equally amazing)
Yellow: Lemon
Cream: Vanilla
Turquoise: Lavender... yes I said Lavender. I did not finish this one. I can't eat lavender. lol

Who knew that Macaroons were so amazing?
Now I know!

Cold Process Soap Making

So I decided I wanted to learn to make soap.

I started with a few things from Michaels only to be bored with the "melt and pour" method they sell supplies for.

I graduated quickly to Cold Process Soap Making.
This is the process that uses Lye.
I spent about a week hunting down all the oils and the Lye.
Evidently it is quite commonly used to make meth.

Darn those illegal drugs for making it difficult for me to craft!

I ended up buying the lye from a chemical distributor locally.

(if you happen to live in the DFW area and need lye give me a holler and we can work something out... maybe a trade? I have 50lbs... that will last me a lifetime of soap making)

Last night I made my first batch.

Tonight I cut it.

Now it gets to sit and "cure" for 4 weeks! ha
Guess I better get busy making soap for selling since it takes weeks to cure!

I did not add any color to the first batch but it is a yummy Coconut Lime scent.

It has been about 1.5 months since I opened my Etsy Shop, Nikobee. Today I had my 5th sale... literally one month to the day that I had my first sale. I have some work to do on my shop (better photos) this weekend. I also have some yummy pink and green Merino to spin up, a custom order for my sister K.

I am also contributing to the Phat Fiber Sample Box for the first time in June. Be sure and check it out.
Our theme this month is "Oceanic".
I am contributing Superwash Merino that has been custom dyed in the "Whirling Tides" colorway. Some of my "Whirling Tides" samples might include some "Drift Wood" OR "Seaweed" :) I also have plans for one of my samples to have a hidden treasure inside it.

Have you ever gone to the beach and lost a "treasure"? Maybe it was a cherrished piece of jewelry...... a valuable trinket... or ???

maybe you found your LOST object among the "Whirling Tides", "Drift Wood", "Seaweed" OR while gazing at the "Coral Sunset" ...

One can only hope all is not LOST.

Setting the twist (above). Yes the jar of sauce fell.. a few times and didn't break! Then it fell again, didn't break, or so I thought. I carried it to the kitchen and realized the seal was broken... I played with the button that was now undone and that forced a piece of glass loose and now I have RED Spaghetti Sauce Stained carpet in my dining room! Time to call Mike...
(Next time I won't use a weight that is breakable!)

This past Saturday Brian and I went to a little town (which shall remain nameless) not far from where he lives. We completed our task/shopping/adventure and needed nourishment.
We inquired as to a "good B-B-Q joint" and were promptly directed to .....It was prefaced by
"It looks like a shack but is suppose to be the best B-B-Q in the state of TEXAS!"

followed by....
"I have never been there...."

We decided to "go there"

We were totally game ... and hungry.

We knew from the moment we walked in the door that we had no business being there!

We enjoyed our meal... nothing to rave about ...and left quickly.

I personally like Dad's B-B-Q

There will be no photo with this post as I couldn't bring myself to take a picture. A few moments ago I was rummaging through my tiny kitchen cabinet and a HUGE can of soup fell out and landed on my collection of Pie Birds. :(

I wanted to cry.

I still might.

Two of my black birds were shattered into unrecognizable pieces. Two of my tiny whistle birds were also broken. I'm not as sad about the whistle birds because they are just a little china trinket from an old vendor/friend.

I'm most sad about my Pie Birds because they are rare and hard to find.

I am however relieved that my Mammy & Pappy pie birds survived as well as one Black Bird and one Brown Bird.

*Sigh*

I think I am going to take a nap.

I hate tiny apartment kitchens and Progresso soup.

Spinning 101

I have owned my Wheel (Ashford Kiwi) for about 4 years now and only spun about three different times/pieces of roving.

I arranged to take a spinning class from Cindy at Jacob's Reward Farm.

I spent Valentines Day with the Alpaca!

Don't they have the sweetest faces?

I'm not an animal person...

I went to the TxOLAN Alpaca Show in Ft. Worth today for the FIBER.
(TxOLAN= Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico)

I did purchase a few fiber goodies.... two balls of Alpaca Roving and one Wool "Top Knot" from New Zealand
(the colored ball is the wool... isn't it beautiful!).

So prior to my Alpaca adventures... as I was hunting for the said Alpaca Show there were other events going on at the same location... only in different buildings.
There was a gun show...... which could have been fun with the right person (hint, hint!)
and a Flea Market.
I couldn't resist walking through the Flea Market.
I'm sooooo glad I did.
The prices were FABULOUS!

Here are my amazing finds!
#1. Super Funky, Ugly/Cute Metal File Box - $5.00
I'm in LOVE! I'm going to file my bills and receipts in this beauty! It makes me happy.

#2. 8"x5" Enamel Ware container (US Certified Stainless Ware) - $1.00Perfect for organizing in my craft room... gotta get it cleaned up again!

#3. Baby Crock w/Blue Stripe - $4.00
As you can see I have a LARGE Crock that holds my kitchen utensils...
I also have several small kitchen utensils that get lost in the bottom of the LARGE Crock so this baby crock is the perfect solution!

#4. Fenton Milk Glass Sugar Bowl (Hobnail Pattern) - $4.00

This is a group shot of my new piece with it's siblings. I really need to figure out how to display my milk glass where it looks good. Any ideas?
#5. Sterling Silver Heart Ring (Black, Red & Turquoise Stones) - $10.00I tried to get the lady to take $8.00 for the ring but she would have no part of that... I left it there and walked away. Decided as I walked the rest of the Flea Market that I really liked it and if it was there when I was done I would get it. As you have probably figured out... It was there when I went back and it is now mine. Kinda unique with the stones stacked on top of the heart... it really struck me.

Grand total spent at Flea Market: $24.00
I must say I did pretty darn good!
The Fenton Milk Glass is worth much more alone!

It is now time for bed.

Today I drove to Southlake to go to a store and remembered that Art251 was out in Keller not far from where I was going. Art251 opened towards the end of 2008 and they have an Artomat Machine!!!!!

I was putting together my Project 365 Kits first two weeks and realized I didn't have a photo for today. At least I did not realize I had one but it wasn't printed.

I dyed my hair earlier and took a few photos to see what it looked like.
Ya know mirrors don't work so I had to take a picture!

I always try to take "non-chubby" pictures.... LOL

So you ask... What did you get?

This is what I got....

Project 365!
So today... just as soon as the hair color is done I will shower and get all pretty then head out to print beautiful pictures of the past 2 weeks and begin putting my book together. It's going to be so cool once it's done.

For those of you who didn't hear about this project or want to do it on your own with your own supplies ... YOU CAN!

All you need is 12x12 sheet protectors that are separated into 6 slots for 4x6 photos. When the page is opened (one page on each side) you will have two sets, 12 slots for photos.

Then you do one spot as the "Week of" slot, 7 for each photo of the day and then the bottom 4 you separate into 8, one is blank or decorative and the other 7 are for journaling each day/photo!

Ok I'm off to wash the dye out of my hair!

Recovery of Galveston Island

Brian and I went down to Galveston Island yesterday to see what IKE had left behind.

I have a lot of fond memories of Galveston and it was sad to see those places destroyed.

The Houston Single Adults would hang out near this pavilion (i know it was more than that but can't really remember). I think this was North Beach if memory serves me right.
Maybe East Beach. The 5 Dollar sign is missing the more recent part of the sign with the 8 Dollar price. You can see how the asphalt below the booth is shifted and broken. The booth was tilted backward quite a bit.... It's amazing what Mother Nature can do. The Pavilion is in the background of the booth photo.

The three photos above were where I sang my ONE and only Karaoke song EVER!

funny quick story about that night... Crazy Drunk Chick was singing and we were rolling laughing at her.... She walked up to our table and put her hand on her hip (on top of the shorty short overalls with a tank top underneath) and professed
"Aint no Shame in MY Game"!

I thought for sure I would NEVER see anyone from that night again
... hence the reason I actually sang.
But wouldn't you know it...
One month later I was in my local Wally World minding my own business
... mind you I was in KATY and who do you think I see?
"Little Miss No Shame"!!!

and as you can see from the photo above... This was Stewart Beach.

Galveston has really been cleaned up but there is so much left to be done.

* You probably don't know (unless your family) but I was diagnosed with Diabetes (type 2) about two weeks ago. I am making some significant life changes and realizing lots of things about why I am like I am... My body has no idea what to do with the Insulin it makes so I have WAY too much in my body. I'm on meds now and working with a Diabetes Educator/Nutritionist. I'm happy to say I have already lost at least 10 lbs.... maybe more!
Watch for updates!!!

It did not work :)

PS. he can be really goofy but makes me really happy... which is the most important thing!

I rang in the New Year watching Twilight for the 3rd time....Dallas had not seen it yet
(Shocking, I know)
so that's what we did!
The ONLY ones in the theater!

Oh and yes the fact that I hung out with Dallas means I went to Houston for New Years.
The main reason being to spend it with Brian but also got to hang out with Dallas.

Ok now back to the EXCITED part!

Friday my company had our Christmas Party.... Lunch at the Riverwalk Cafe in The Gaylord Texan and then we went to ICE.
ICE is a large display of hand carved Ice sculptures. They fly in Chinese ice artists and you walk through (yes literally through) the display at something like 30 below! They give you these cute blue jackets to wear so you don't freeze your tooshie off.

What a GREAT movie!
Yes, it is rated R... I watched it on TV so it was edited.
This is a MUST WATCH movie for ALL single women.
How many times have you been in a relationship where you got nothing from it?
If I could only count them all.
Ray Porter (Steve Martin) is a man you can't help but to love.
He thinks he has made himself "clear" as to the state of their relationship... you know the whole

HE thinks: "she is clear that I want nothing more"
HA!
while SHE thinks: "wow, he does so and so ... he must really love me"

Then there is Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman) who is a fumbling, goofy, dorky, weirdo that she should have been scared of!

Q#1: Do you think I should cover my star with black and white damask paper? (from Meg)
A: I dont remember how big yours is.... Just go easy on the black and white balance! :)

Q#2: How do you make the star? (from Meg AND Sarah)
A: Well they are metal stars ( I wanted to do them wood but the only ones available had to be ordered on line and that would take to much time). I didn't make them but told the girl how to do it. Make a template with blank paper of the sides of the star you want to cover. She basically combined two sides of the star in the same template. I would have done each flat surface a different template/paper. Use Modpodge to glue it on. If you want it slick/shiny cover the surface with the Modgepodge also. She didn't cover the surface on this sample but sanded a tiny bit and then inked it. It looks cute just sanded also.
It is Scrapbook paper we covered it with.

Q#3: Home sign how?
A: It's a $3.00 frame from Wal-Mart that simply has the Vinyl Lettering rubbed on. The glass is hot glued on so it wont fall out cause you dont put the back on it. You drill holes through the frame to run the ribbon through. Sarah, I will make you one. :)

The box sat at the Apartment office for a while because either the FedEX man does not like me or the Texas wind blew away my little sticky note!
Either way I got it today!

Craft Guild of Dallas - fundraiser

Today the Craft Guild of Dallas was having a fundraiser/demonstration. It is only 6 miles from my house and they were doing pottery, precious metal clay, lamp working (making glass beads) and book binding.
I wanted to see the demonstrations so I went.
It was pretty busy.....
I found this little piece and decided to help them raise funds.
I know it's Sunday but I refuse to feel bad "breaking the Sabbath" by helping the Craft Guild raise money to update their equipment.
The vase stands almost 7" tall and I really like the texture.

Remember the old school office binder to make nifty bound books for whatever your corporate occasion? This my dear is a FABULOUS binder for scrapbooking. There are many things you can do with this lovely tool. Make your own notebook, Mini-albums (my favorite idea so far), oh and if you have a new "tin" license plate that is old you can punch holes in it and bind pages into it! you can punch through a CD and make a mini-album... so many fun things.....

I saved a box that 2 packages of Fruit Chillers came in and cut it up... Along the left side I will punch the holes and bind it all together in it's own little mini-album. I figured it was time I posted ... at least something. Ever since I took the time to figure out Google Reader I haven't done much blogging. I just read everyone's! I know, not fair.

I am trying to change my ways.

Birthday Plans: I have been cleaning my apartment tonight so I don't feel guilty running off and doing something fun tomorrow to celebrate my birthday. My celebrations must take place on Saturday seeing as how my actual birthday is on the Sabbath day this year. I think I have decided to go antiquing tomorrow after I get my hair cut. Part of me wants to drive over to Canton because there are so many places to shop and the prices are very good... but it's not "the" weekend to do Canton. The first weekend of the month is evidently the HUGE weekend at Canton. I stopped there on my drive to Atlanta and bough a cool metal basket for 20 bucks.

So speaking of Antiquing....

These are a few of my most recent finds.

1. New Pie Birds... that are not actually birds! The ones on the far right... Mammy and Pappy. The third one from the right is also a recent addition found in Canton... It's brown and black, unlike the three on the far left that are the typical pie birds you might find. These make me happy :)

2. Sunbonnet Sue pillows (from old quilts). I found these both in the same day. It was not a collection I had already started. Honestly I just want the Sunbonnet Sue quilt that used to hang over the headboard (propped up between the wall and the side of the bed) at my Grandmas house. Siblings... you might remember this... I know I have fond memories of sleeping on Grandmas bed. Anyway, here is a picture of the two pillows I found on the same day in stores just down the street from one another in rural North Texas. Kind of hard to see them so click on the pic to make it bigger.

3. Old Office Shelf (metal)... previously a nasty "I have a brain cloud, stuck in a ding office gray" now painted a happy pink color to brighten up my craft room and provide some organization of my "stuff".
Here is a picture of the shelf and then one of my craft room with it "in use" :)

So I decided it was time for a new phone. I'm currently sitting in my friends front yard in rural Texas blogging on my new Blackberry Curve! Friday April 25th: So long, Fare well, ALF-viterzane
GOOD FREAKING BYE Wally World!
After an intense personal struggle I decided I would stop pursuing the Sr. Business Analyst position at Wal-Mart ISD. I was only continuing with this thought/job so I could feed myself and I knew it was the wrong thing for me to do. As of 4/25 I had my second interview with person # 5 at Michael's/agent and he was 70% comfortable with offering me the job I really wanted for Michael's craft store. "person #5" wanted me to drive down to Dallas nest Friday and meet face to face again... I was more than happy to oblige. :)

Saturday April 26th: Nicki packs up her cute little car and it is now known as the "closet on wheels" and heads to north Dallas to spend a week with Aunt Mayme and Uncle Denny. The truth be known..... They worked me hard out on the ranch. So I spent a week at Double Creek Ranch.

Friday May 2nd: Interview #3 with person #5 for the Michael's job. At the end of the interview person # 5 offered me the JOB!!!! Nicki is one happy camper ... even though she doesn't really camp. :)

Saturday May 3rd: Nicki and Aunt Mayme head back down to the BIG D to find and apartment. 5:59pm... lease signed!

Monday May 5th: Road Trip to Hot-lanta to see the family!

Tuesday May 13th: Road Trip back to Arkansas to pack up a U-Haul with all my junk and move to The BIG D!

Thursday May 15th: Head out of Arkansas in a MONSTER U-Haul with my car in tow!
That evening the men from my new ward unload my junk.
* Ever notice how when you move you tend to pack up what I will call "junk boxes" and they never get unpacked? Well this time they must get unpacked as I have no room in my 811 sq. ft. apartment to store it!

Thursday May 22nd: I'm sick of unpacking and I want to see my friends in Houston... I decide to pack my bags and hit the road again.

Friday May 23rd: Still in Houston, TX...
I should be starting my new job on Tuesday but haven't heard from them yet.... SIGH.

Yes... today was a crap day and for that matter so was yesterday. Lets start with Saturday night because it wasn't a crap day.

Saturday - I signed up for a crop (an event where scrapbookers join in their creative efforts and "crop" their photos togethere... aka: scrapbooking) at Sign Sealed Delivered. I was on the waiting list and got a phone call on Thursday saying I was in if I wanted... I wanted. So I got to scrapbook for 7 hours! Had I not already had a hair appointment I would have had a few more hours but hey... 7 is good isn't it? so that night I got 5 pages done. What a feeling of accomplishment!

Sunday - Just flat out in a crappy mood... sick of the whole job hunt thing and sick of talking about it. I stayed for the majority of church and decided I couldn't stand to tell one more person that I KNOW NOTHING in regards to the job hunt. This might very well have been my last day in the Bella Vista Ward... I just don't know!!!!
For those of you who are in my ward and read this blog ...it's not personal. I'm just tired. After church I went home (to Stephanie and Mikes, who are sooooo generous and are letting me stay in their guest room) and took a two hour nap. I got up later, did laundry, dishes, took out the trash and made sure the house was all straightened up for their return.

Monday - aka: Crap Day! Got up, went to work... for what reason I do not know! All of my coworkers relocated their offices to the new building this past weekend....so today there were the remaining Product Development and Souring people scattered through the area.... a Ghost Town. We all started to move to one central location... dubbed the "Refuge Camp"

*Insert happy moment* not in the middle of the day mind you but this very moment. I was sitting here typing thinking it's to darn quiet. I opened a new tab on my browser and clicked on my blog link so I could listen to the music my sister puts on there for me. Thank you KD :) Ok so ..... Wouldn't you know it... one of my favorite songs started.

Funny thing... who ever put it on the playlist thing (not KD) said it's Air Supply... NOT. I know Air Supply... My first music love! And this is not them...LOL
Ok back to the crappy day I started with.

Back to the Refugee Camp... I sat there as long as I could stand it... nothing to do, nothing really to talk about other than the job situation. So with that I left! I called home, cried, cried some more, went to Sign Sealed Delivered, purchased a few things, went home, gave Mike and Steph the job update, took a LONG freaking nap. I got up at 7, I think i laid down at 3:30 at the latest... didn't sleep right away but dang if I didn't need that huge nap. I woke up feeling much better.
No matter how I try to stay motivated and up-beat about the job hunt crap I'm still feeling physically tired of this crap.
Oh I forgot my one little funny on the drive home today. I'm staying out quite a ways from town so along my drive I pass cows, chicken buildings... ha! have no idea what to call them.. chicken houses? Anyways... I pass huge water towers, abandoned HUGE developments where the MONSTER fence or large brick entrance was built and nothing more.... And today I passed a DONKEY... yes a burrow, an Ass... Scratching his ear on a metal fence post! Made me giggle and put a smile on my face. I know it was a simple thing... silly... and made me laugh... which I so needed.
Ok now back to the events after my nap.. nothing to exciting. I went to WM, spent 80 bucks... I always have to remind myself when I do that .... that 35 of it is gas... ya know the lovely "buy a gift card, save 3 cents" thingy.... still makes me feel like I RECYCLE to dang much money at WM. Funny how they are all about Sustainability and saving the earth... I recycle... MY MONEY! ...at WM. Sad! Sad! Sad!

So part of that 80 bucks included the movie JUNO.... so darn cute. I love her humor. I so get it.
While I watched Juno I did a scrapbook page of Andrew... black and white... he is of course closing his eyes in the picture. He is so funny... he sees a camera and closes his eyes because he doesn't like the flash. Gotta love it. That brings us to this moment... Now im sitting here on my bed, typing, listening to music and about to go to bed.
I have an internal job interview tomorrow.... can I say I really don't want the job? I want to stay in my chosen career field. Tomorrow I will of course act like I want the job.
At least that is how I feel today.

Digital Scrapbooking is AMAZING!

Granted I will NEVER give up the paper ;)

...this is why I think Digital Scrapbooking is so great.

1. No mess to clean up... just shut down the program and flip the switch on your computer and BINGO! ...Your done!
2. FREE Supplies!!! Did I say FREE? YES! I said FREE!!! Ok so your computer is not free and is in fact a HUGE investment but all of you out there have access to a computer anyway, right? So on the the free stuff.... Its simple, most digital scrapbooking sites have areas that list the free downloads or you can browse through your favorite digital scrap magazine and they list free downloads or simply do a web search. Lots of people note it on their blogs... I'm not there yet but most people do. Some day I will be that methodical and note where each and every paper or element came from.
3. Easy Shopping! You don't have to leave home much less get out of your chair! The world is at your fingertips... none of the dreaded
"sigh...but *enter store name here* is so far away".
(Can you tell I have limited resources where I live?)
4. ALMOST... Instant Gratification! Ok so maybe not instant but dang QUICK! I did the below LO (layout for those of you not fluent in Scrapbooking short hand) in just about an hour. Now if this were paper it would have taken me the better part of 3 hours.

It's Sunday night, I woke from a nap about 1 1/2 hours ago, I need a job, I live with friends and I'm sick of looking for a job.....
Ugh!!!! I'm also searching for blogs... scrapbook blogs. What on earth makes all you creative people out there (ok scrapbookers) think I want to READ your blog???? Where are the Pictures????? I want to be inspired, motivated... get a free kick in the pants!!! But noooooo....

I'm buying a new computer. Saturday morning I am getting up as early as I can and driving to Tulsa to the Mac Store in Woodland Hills Mall. I am buying a Mac Book with my tax return. I need a new computer so bad... the one I have now is a cast off from a major Oil Company and I have have it for about 2 or 3 years. It is time for a new one!
